FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Install extinguishers in the unit. Check current fire code in your area. Minimum is 1 in common areas and 1 in furnace room.

BARS ON WINDOWS: When you purchase a property some of the windows may have safety bars on them as the previous owner may have been worried about security. I have had police friends tell me that most bad guys just kick in the front door so in a lot of cases the window bars are useless.
- REMOVE ALL BARS on windows end of story….
- If you have not removed them, make sure the bars are not locked.
- If the bars are locked hang a key on a string close to the lock, but out of reach of the window so it will not get lost.
- Did I mention REMOVE all bars! It is much better to have a tenant call and say they were robbed than have the police call and say your tenant was killed in a fire and they are coming to lock you up for murder and fire code violations.
